Asbestos Removal Laws
There are laws governing the removal and disposal of asbestos containing materials. Any person being paid to do this type of work must hold the appropriate builders license, asbestos removal license and if transporting asbestos waste the appropriate EPA transport license.
These laws are:
- Code of Practice: How to Safely Remove Asbestos October 2018

- Environmental Protection Act 1993 (Section 36 of the EP Act.)
- Environment Protection Regulations 2009
Never Remove Asbestos Yourself
Some may consider removing asbestos themselves. This should be considered very carefully as these Codes of Practice may still apply. If a neighbour or member of the public lodges a complaint to Safework SA you can end up in hot water if you haven’t taken appropriate precautions to comply. The question is WHY would you WANT to subject yourself to potential exposure to asbestos unnecessarily when you can have the asbestos removed legally, professionally and most important SAFELY by South Adelaide Asbestos Removal.

Your Asbestos Removal Questions Answered
Q1: Can I remove asbestos myself?
A1: If the asbestos is in your own home then the answer is yes. However it is NOT RECOMMENDED. There are many Codes of Practice and Work Health and Safety requirements that must be met by ANYONE removing asbestos. There is also specialised equipment and Personalised Protective Equipment that must be sourced and fitted correctly. Without proper training you could very easily be exposing yourself to great risk!
Q2: Is it best to remove asbestos cement or leave it alone?
A2: This is a subjective question. If the asbestos is in very good condition it may be ok to leave it alone, however many people prefer not to have asbestos in their homes, particularly if they have children. If the asbestos is weathered and beginning to break down or damaged in any way it is highly recommended to remove it. Either way, if it’s removed by a licensed removalist you are going to have better peace of mind!
Q3: How quickly can asbestos affect your health?
A3: Asbestos related diseases often have a long latency period. Asbestosis can take as long at 15 – 30 years to become evident.
Q4: Is it worth buying a house with asbestos in it?
A4: Asbestos containing houses often sell much cheaper than non-asbestos containing homes. We do a lot of asbestos removal for new home owners before they move in. They reap the benefit of paying less for the house then deal with the problem before they live in the home – Win/Win!
Q5: How can I tell if a product in my home is asbestos?
A5: You aren’t able to ascertain if a building product contains asbestos just from looking at it. You can gauge the likelihood from considering the age of the building and the location of the materials (wet areas or external products are far more likely to contain asbestos), However best practice is to assume that if the product was installed before 1993, then it will likely to contain asbestos. When in any doubt, get the material tested.
Q6: How do I get asbestos removed from my house?
A6: Luckily that’s the easiest part – Call a licensed asbestos removalist like South Adelaide Asbestos Removal and we’ll take care of it all for you!
South Adelaide Asbestos Removal recently removed some asbestos from a commercial tenancy that I own. I met Kevin on site and he did a measure up and gave me a quote within 24 hours. The quote was extremely reasonable considering the amount of work that was required. The asbestos was removed quickly, efficiently and professionally.
