Asbestos Testing Adelaide
Asbestos Testing Adelaide homes and business is very important. If you think there is the possibility asbestos cement is present you must get an inspection and preferably have the material tested too. South Adelaide Asbestos Removal has been Asbestos Testing Adelaide Commercial and Domestic buildings for over 20 years.
“How do you know if asbestos may b present in your home?”
If you home was built prior to 1989 it is highly likely to contain asbestos. The only way to be sure if material contains asbestos or not is to have it tested.
The Asbestos Testing Process
The ONLY conclusive method to identify asbestos in building materials is a laboratory test know as Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) which is a technique that employs the use of polarizing filters and optical dispersion staining to obtain substantial optical property information about the material which is being observed. This information can be combined with other microscopy techniques to confirm the identity of an unknown material, such as asbestos mineral fibres.
This test is performed on small samples taken of the building material which is broken down and dried prior to examination.
“How much does asbestos testing cost?”
Asbestos testing of cement based products costs between $110 and $295. This will depend on whether you supply the sample to be tested yourself or a company has to come out and collect samples and will also vary according to the number of samples to be collected and tested.
Expert Asbestos Site Inspection
We will come to your home or business and assess the areas you are concerned about. We can quickly visually assess your property and point out areas that are likely to have asbestos containing products in them. We can take one sample or as many as required. Where ever possible this is done out of site (from power point holes, fan holes etc.) so there is the minimum visible disruption to your home. Whilst onsite we will measure up any suspected asbestos containing materials so we can prepare a free quote for removal and disposal if the sample tests positive for asbestos fibres.
Asbestos Testing Options
Once you have contacted us and discussed where asbestos may be in your home (look here for information https://asbestosremoval.com.au/asbestos-in-my-home/ ), you have two options. Take the sample yourself and bring it to us to have it tested (we don’t recommend this as we don’t advocate untrained persons handling asbestos containing materials). Alternatively, have us come to you – where we will safely collect samples and take them away for asbestos testing. We will also be able to prepare a free removal quote for you, just in case.
Asbestos Testing Results
Asbestos Testing Results
One the testing process has been completed the results are presented to the owner in a written report that will usually identify the particular asbestos mineral fibre present and the classification of the building material. This will either be:
“Non Friable” Non-friable asbestos products are made from a bonding compound (such as cement) mixed with a small proportion (usually less than 15%) of asbestos. Non-friable asbestos products are solid, rigid and cannot be easily crumbled, pulverised or reduced to powder by hand pressure. Common names for non-friable asbestos cement products are ‘fibro’, ‘asbestos cement’ and ‘AC sheeting’. These products are extremely common in Adelaide homes and should be removed before any work is done on surrounding areas.
“Friable” These products usually contain high levels of asbestos (up to 100% in some cases), which is loosely held in the product and asbestos fibres can be easily released into the air. Some friable products were also used in houses and may still be found in houses built before 1990. Examples of friable asbestos-containing material include pipe lagging, boiler insulation, fire retardant material on steel work and sprayed insulation. Friable asbestos should not be disturbed IN ANY WAY and removed as a matter of urgency.
Depending on the type of product being sampled the results can be back as quick as 3 days. If the sample is urgent we can turn some tests around in just 24 hours for an additional fee. Some products such as asbestos containing vinyl floor tiles can take longer due to the material needing to be “broken down” in the lab.
Once we have the preliminary result we will notify you by telephone, once the report is written up this will be sent to you via email.

Asbestos becomes a health risk when large amounts of asbestos fibres are released into the air and inhaled. People generally start to consider removing the asbestos when they want to do have building work done and they are told by the electrician or plumber etc. that they aren’t going near the job until the asbestos is removed! The problem with waiting until this happens is that the work you want done will be delayed until the removal process can begin, as government approval is required for all asbestos work over 10 metres square it can take days to get the paperwork processed and that can be costly if you’ve got tradesman charging you for the downtime!
