Asbestos Eaves Removal Questions and Answers

Question: Do all houses have asbestos cement eaves?

Answer:

No, some houses don’t have lined eaves at all. That said Asbestos cement was the most common material used to line eaves from the 1960’s all the way to 1993.

Question: My Building Inspector or Tradesman said it’s not asbestos, so I’m good right?

Answer:

NO!  The only way to be sure is to have testing done. Unless your tradesman or building inspector has previous experience identifying or removing asbestos they may be making ill-informed statements… better to know than guess! Contact South Adelaide Asbestos Removal for more information and advice on asbestos eave removal.

Question: The eaves on my house are painted cement sheet that looks in good order, is it likely to be asbestos?

Answer:

If it was built before 1993 its very likely!  When in any doubt ALWAYS treat ANY cement sheet as asbestos cement without test results that say otherwise

Question: Can I just leave the eaves alone?

Answer:

Yes, as long as they are in good condition and well maintained and painted. However, if you want any electrical light or CCTV cameras fitted you’ll most likely find the tradesman will want the eaves removed first so they can be replaced with non- asbestos based cement sheet that is safer for drilling / cutting etc.

Question: What does asbestos cement eaves look like?

Answer:

Generally, asbestos eave linings are 3 – 6mm thick and a mid grey colour. The sheets are very hard and not very flexible compared to gyprock or plaster. If you can carefully prod the sheet with a knife it will easily penetrate gyprock or plaster (which is generally white, chalky and soft) whereas asbestos will be VERY difficult to penetrate at all.
